Father Confessor

Some people just have to tell you their secrets and not everyone wants to be a Father Confessor. Reference is made in this song to a Sin Eater and I’ve been asked several times what this refers to. In the old Welsh tradition the Sin Eater was hired at funerals where he would eat bread from atop the chest of a corpse, thereby taking on its sins, and freeing the deceased's soul to heaven.

You keep telling me that you've been cheating
And you keep asking me what to do
But you don't listen you just keep talking
About the guilt and the trouble you're going through

Chorus
Don't want to be your father confessor
Don't want to hear you moan
Don't want to be your father confessor
Anyway I've got these troubles of my own

Now you're saying that you're sorry
But I really think that you think you've done quite well
Are you confessing or are you bragging
Or do you just need some fool to tell

chorus

I don't want to judge you though you keep on asking
Anyway I've only heard your side
In any case I'm not that bothered
About whether you're honest or whether you've lied

chorus

Don't want to be your sin eater
Don't want the monkey off your back
Don't want to be your father confessor
Don't want to wear a cloak that's long and black
