Hard Times Make Strong Men

I came across the quotation, which is the chorus of this song, in an excellent book by G Michael Hopf, "Those Who Remain". The quote can be applied throughout history, including, of course today. I invite you to make what you will of the song and put your own interpretations to the verses.

Hard times make strong men
Strong men make good times
Good times make weak men
Weak men make hard times

We're all on a circle that goes on and on
If you’re In the good times you might not see things go wrong
You might not see the train, if it's hidden by the bend
But when the train crash happens that's when the good times end

Chorus

Strong men learn from history, which weak men seek to change
If their views are challenged then facts are re-arranged
Weak men follow fashion adopting every trend
Strong men have their principles and defend them til the end

Chorus

Strong men chase off the wolf that is howling at the door
Weak men just let it in and give it more and more
If the wolf is at your table you’ll be scrabbling on the floor
Searching for crumbs of comfort which don’t drop anymore

Chorus

We dare not say the truth in case the truth offends
Instead we utter platitudes and with a smile pretend
That things are as we wish them but deep inside we know
That hard times are coming as we watch the good times go
