I Love The Black Country
It doesn't feature in the song, but the thing that really struck me about the Black Country when I moved from Cumbria was the amazing number of music venues for folk and blues music. You can go out on any night of the week and find music in a pub or a club within easy driving distance, and everyone is always friendly and welcoming. The other thing that struck me, which does feature in the song, was the lack of industry, a lot of which had closed down and given way to shopping developments such as Merry Hill.
Chorus
Oh I love the Black Country
And all the places around
Sedgely, Tipton and Gornal
And good old Dudley Town
When first I came to the Black Country
My surprise I remember still
Instead of nailmakers, chainmakers, and steelworks
I just found Merry Hill
chorus
I expected to see streets with cobbles
I'd seen pictures of it somewhere
Instead there's The M5 and M6
With traffic congestion polluting the air
chorus
I'd heard about Aynuk and Ayli
So I went to a Black Country night
I didn't understand a word uttered
But the Black Country Beer was alright
chorus
Now I live in the Black Country
Most of my friends live here too
We're all eating pork scratchings and Balti
Washed down with our favourite brew
chorus
