Running To And From

I once came across a comment which was written below a newspaper article; "Remember what you're running to could easily become the very thing you're running from". I can't recall the article, but this little phrase stuck in my mind.

She had been married thirty years or so
When she made up her mind now was the time and she would have to go
She told her husband she was leaving, leaving him today
She packed her things, walked out the door; he watched her drive away
Remember what you’re running to It could easily become
The very thing …. That you’re running from

It was getting dark in the office the day was growing long
He struggled with the spreadsheet; the figures were all wrong
His boss was walking over, and he took the chance to speak
He said “I’m leaving for a better job, I was interviewed last week”

Remember what you’re running to It could easily become

The very thing …. That you’re running from

They say the grass is greener and sometimes they are right
But sometimes you discover it’s just a trick of the light
Some people are moving forwards, others are holding back
But most of us run blindly with the pack

Years later things have settled down, she’s found another man
But he doesn’t pay her much attention and she’s feeling trapped again
She’s wondering whether to leave him or whether to stay
But now she realises it doesn’t matter either way
Remember what you’re running to It could easily become

The very thing …. That you’re running from

And he’s moved from job to job, but none have been quite right
The stress is causing problems; he stays awake at night
His hair is getting thinner the years have not been kind
He’s been searching on the internet but new jobs are hard to find

Remember what you’re running to It could easily become
The very thing …. That you’re running from
