Sophie (Doesn't Live Here Anymore)

I first met Sophie when I was at school
She was everybody’s sweetheart I was the class fool
I should have paid her more attention but I was too busy breaking all the rules
She went to college; she went her way I went mine
I heard that she partied there and had a good time
There was even talk of drugs but I didn’t pay it any mind
But Sophie doesn’t live here any more

She never graduated she was always moving on
From one country to another until she met someone
She could love trust and depend on but it went all wrong
It was a marriage made in heaven but it ended up in hell
He beat her and abused her and left her a hollow shell
She needed help but it seems there was no-one there to tell
But Sophie doesn’t live here anymore

I often thought of Sophie and wished I had been strong
And told her that I loved her before her life went wrong
Perhaps she might have said to me she loved me all along
I heard she’d moved back to my town I thought I’d look her up
I found the flat where she was living and thought I was in luck
Climbed the stairs and rang the bell I wasn’t ready for the shock
But Sophie doesn’t live here anymore

Her eyes were dull and lifeless and her voice was slurred and slow
With a bottle in her hand she said “who are you looking for?”
I said “I’m sorry to have bothered you it seems she doesn’t live here anymore.”
I felt Sophie looking after me as I walked down the stairs
I thought of how I once loved her and how I should have cared
But the woman that I remembered was no longer there
No Sophie doesn’t live here anymore
