Treacle Town

At least two towns in the UK have the nickname "Treacle Town". Macclesfield's traditional nickname is "Treacle Town" — supposedly from an incident when a load of treacle was spilt on Hibel Road, and the poor scooped it off the cobbles. The nickname was also given to Nuneaton on account of the former jam and treacle factory based there. This song, however, has nothing to do with either town; it's about a state of mind that most of us experience from time to time.

Everybody’s just sitting around
Watching the sun come up or the sun go down
It’s either light or dark as the world spins round
But nothing’s black or white in Treacle Town
Nothing’s black or white in Treacle Town

Now the air is heavy with lethargy

It seeps into you by degrees
You’re feeling kinda groggy and weak at the knees
You feel so tired in Treacle Town
You feel so tired in Treacle Town

There are always forms and papers to fill in
You haven’t got a clue where to begin
You pick up your pen and your head starts to spin
You feel so confused in Treacle Town
You feel so confused in Treacle Town

It seems like tomorrow will be like today
And That’s just the same as yesterday
People smile and then they just walk away
It’s always like this in Treacle Town
It’s always like this in Treacle Town

You ask for advice “Hey, what should I do?”
Everyone says “Well, it’s up to you”
They just throw your words right back at you
You feel so alone in Treacle Town
You feel so alone in Treacle Town
