Writing Comes Hard To A Man
This song is dedicated to the memory of one of the Great Bluesmen, Mance Lipscomb. If you haven't heard any of his music, check him out, he's good.
That's not the only reason I admire him. When he was young he taught himself to read and write. He did this by picking up scraps of paper from the floor of the commissary store and took them home to copy out the writing by lantern light. In an interview he came up with the immortal line
"If you don't have your schooling, writing's gonna come hard to a man"
Chorus
Writing comes hard to a man
Writing comes hard to a man
When you ain't got no schoolin'
You do the best you can
Writing comes hard to a man
It's hard and it's hard to be poor
It's hard and it's hard to be poor
But if you ain't got your pride
It hurts you that much more
And it's hard and it's hard to be poor
chorus
Freedom is hard road to ride
Freedom is hard road to ride
You better hurry up and get on it
Because time ain’t on your side
Freedom is a hard road to ride
chorus
There's one thing they'll never take from you
There's one thing they'll never take from you
When you got your writing
You got it your whole life through
There's one thing they'll never take from you
chorus
If you want to keep him ignorant and poor
If you want to keep him ignorant and poor
Don’t throw your scraps of paper
Down on the store floor
Because writing comes hard to a man
chorus
